RECORD TIME HISTORY

Record Time opened it's doors on May 12, 1983 in East Detroit (now Eastpointe), Michigan. Through the years and several moves there is now one Record Time location, just down the road from that first store on Gratiot Avenue in Roseville. In 1990 owner Mike Himes saw the beginnings of what would be the Electronic music scene starting up around him. Taking a personal interest in the music he opened the first of the world famous Record Time Dance Rooms in the store at 10 Mile and Gratiot. A store within a store dedicated solely to Techno, House and Hip Hop music. When the Electronic music scene was still in its infancy, he started Record Time Distribution in order to better spread Detroit and Midwest Techno around world. Record Time Distribution employed such famous DJs as DJ Munk, Dan Bell and Claude Young. For a time John Acquaviva and Richie Hawtin's Intellinet Distribution and +8 Records was housed in the back of the Roseville location. With the explosion of Electronic Music, Record Time became know around the world for their cutting edge Dance Room and online presence. We sponsored many raves, conferences and underground parties through the 1990's and into the 2000's. We were also involved in the first three DEMF (Movement) Festival's. Record Time has continued through the years to have some of the scene's best loved artists working in the store including Detroit's own Mike Huckaby who worked the Roseville Dance Room for 14 years. Due to the ever changing state of the industry, as of September 2005 both of our stores have their Dance Room stock integrated into the regular floor space of Record Time.

Record Time may have had some well known employees but we've also had some pretty well known customers as well. Two of Detroit's best known artists have been Record Time customers since 'back in the day'. Kid Rock shopped in the store for many years, mainly buying rock records to put beats over. When he was first signed to Jive records in 1990 he did a signing in the store and over 500 people showed up. Among those in line to get his autograph were the then unknown guys from the Insane Clown Posse and Eminem. Kid Rock did another in store appearance in 1996 spinning records and drew a crowd of less than 10 people! Eminem also was a loyal Record Time customer for many years. He could be spotted in the store at least once weekly buying cassettes and reading 'Source' magazine. He would often freestyle in the store taunting customers and pissing them off. He did an in store signing in 1999 that drew a crowd of over 1000 people. Harry from our Dance Room was a personal friend of Em's and appears in the new DVD 'Eminem AKA' sharing some of his memories of 'Marshall'.
